Why Oxygen is Important for Good Health

Oxygen is vital for the survival of every single cell in your body. Without it, your cells can’t create energy and your metabolism is less effective. During breathing we move air in and out of our lungs, which facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the inside and the outside of the body. By why exactly do our bodies need oxygen for microcirculation, and what happens if we don’t get enough?

Why Our Bodies Need Oxygen

Oxygen supplies nourishment to each cell in your body by combining with food molecules to cause oxidation. It combines with nitrogen and hydrogen, too, to create proteins and release energy that powers everything the body does. It also provides the building blocks needed to reproduce your cells and stay alive. Having enough oxygen is important to the immune system, where it helps to kill bacteria and to fuel the cells that defend our bodies against viruses and infections.

How Blood Circulation Distributes Oxygen

The oxygen is distributed to the cells by the circulatory system, which knows exactly how much to supply to each area of the body. The circulatory system consists of several types of blood vessels:

  • Arteries, which carry the oxygen-rich blood to the tissues,
  • Capillaries, which deliver the oxygen to your cells for respiration and energy release, and
  • Veins, which carry the blood back to the heart through valves that prevent it from flowing back in the wrong direction.

Then there’s the microcirculatory system, which exists in all tissues and organs except for the cornea and moves the blood cells and substances to and from the main arteries to the tissues. It helps with nutritive flow, blood pressure regulation and a temperature regulator for the skin.

Without adequate circulation, the blood won’t get to the areas of the body where it’s needed, and without appropriate microcirculation, the oxygen won’t reach the tissues to nourish them.

What Happens After a Lack Of Oxygen

Many things can go wrong with your health if you don’t get enough oxygen passing through your tissues. Hypoxemia develops when your levels of blood oxygen are too low to sustain you, causing a condition called hypoxia. This includes a range of medical symptoms, such as:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Difficulty breathing well
  • A rapid heartbeat
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Confusion or other mental problems
  • Bluish color in skin, fingernails, and lips

If your oxygen levels are low for long enough, you can develop lasting symptoms that can seriously impact your quality of life. Eventually the brain can start to die off from the lack of oxygen, which can cause brain damage—or death in extreme cases.

Oxygen Therapies

We know oxygen is necessary for life. You can fast if you stop eating food, and can even go without water for a while, but you can’t live without sufficient oxygen for long. In patients with low blood oxygen-related conditions such as cluster headaches, COPD or cystic fibrosis, doctors often recommend supplemental oxygen therapy. This is the use of a face mask attached to an oxygen source, or inside a hyperbaric or pressurized oxygen chamber

Boosting Your Blood Oxygen

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above regularly, or you have low energy and are generally not able to perform at your best, your body may not be using your blood oxygen as optimally as it could. There are ways to boost your level of wellness, however, by ensuring the amount of oxygen reaching your tissues is optimized. Discover how a revolutionary new medical device can support your microcirculation and change the way you feel forever.
